A 1880 Map showing the route from Thornbury to Yate.

Thornbury`s Railway was the result of pressure which had been applied in the District for years. In 1861 a Public Meeting convened and Presided over by the Mayor, Mr. H. H. Lloyd who had discussed the possibility of linking the Town with Bristol. Opened in 1872 on a sunny day, the shops `by pre-arrangement` shut at half past eleven and between twelve and one o`clock, seven hundred children marched to the station, carrying Bannerets inscribed with mottoes for the trip to Yate and back - the fare being fourpence (old Money) each.
